Puzzle Bag in Grained Calfskin — Black, Large

Jonathan Anderson's first bag for Loewe, introduced in 2015, was an argument that a handbag could be a construction problem. The Puzzle is built from flat geometric panels folded into a rectangular box — cut, seamed and assembled so the whole thing collapses flat and reopens into shape, with the seams left visible as the design rather than hidden as a flaw. It became the piece that defined his tenure at the house, and the template for a decade of bags that treated assembly as ornament.

Supple grained calfskin throughout, in black, in the Large size. Zip closure, detachable and adjustable shoulder strap, top carry handle. The panel construction means the bag reads differently from every angle — boxy head-on, angular in profile, nearly flat when collapsed, so it photographs as a different object depending on where the camera sits. Made in Spain, where Loewe's leather goods have been produced since the house was founded as a leather cooperative in 1846 — a century and a half of hide work standing behind a bag that asks a great deal of it.

It sits closer to an architectural object than a conventional messenger bag — the geometry is the point, and the calfskin is asked to do work that most houses would solve with a frame or internal structure. A touch of surface wear shows on the metal feet at the base — faint scratching consistent with regular use, the kind of honest mark that comes from a bag that's actually been carried rather than kept in a box.
