Paseo Knotted Leather Tote — Black

The Paseo arrived with Loewe's Spring/Summer 2023 (Look 25) show in Paris, the collection Jonathan Anderson built around the anthurium, a waxy, heart-shaped flower that appeared as molded breastplates on the runway and as a charm on the bags. The Puzzle and the Flamenco were already fixed house shapes; the Paseo was new, a pleated leather body with the handles growing out of its folds and the Flamenco's coiled knots carried over as its signature, and the house traced its lineage to its own Aire series of the mid-2000s. The tote is the tallest and flattest member of the family. It takes the Paseo's pleats and knots and stretches them into shopper proportions, giving up the satchel's zip and shoulder strap for an open top and a body that will swallow a laptop.

The bag is black leather, supple enough to fold nearly flat, with two long top handles and a pair of thick leather cords knotted at either side. Pull the cords and the sides gather and cinch; leave them slack and the tote opens wide. The house name is marked at the front, and an anthurium charm hangs from the handle, the collection's emblem reduced to a single pendant. It measures about 18 inches across, 23.5 inches high and 3 inches deep, and it was made in Spain.

Read quickly, it is a black leather shopper. Read slowly, it is the Flamenco's drawstring knot and the Paseo's pleating applied to the plainest bag shape there is, a beach tote rebuilt in Madrid leather. The knots do the work that hardware does on other totes, which keeps the surface quiet and the silhouette soft, and the charm is the only thing on it that admits to a season. One size.
