Replica German Army Trainer — Black/Gum, US 10 / EU 43

Maison Margiela's Replica line has never been about designing clothes so much as finding them. The house sources anonymous vintage garments from flea markets and military surplus, then reproduces them exactly, with a white label recording the period and provenance of the original rather than a designer's name. The German Army Trainer is the line's most famous object: a plain court shoe issued to the Bundeswehr in the 1980s, made to a state specification by people with no interest in fashion whatsoever, which became one of the most quietly influential silhouettes in menswear.

Black leather upper with black suede overlays worked into the eyestays, quarter panel and T-toe, so the two materials divide the shoe along the lines the original pattern already had. Padded collar, breathable textile lining and matching flat laces. The insole is cushioned and branded, with built-in arch support. Underneath, a textured gum rubber midsole sits over a lugged gum rubber outsole, and a suede heel tab is finished with contrast stitching. Style S57WS0236P1895H6851.

The whole appeal of the GAT is that nobody was trying to make it attractive — the proportions, the material split, the gum sole are all consequences of a procurement document. Margiela's contribution was recognising that and then refusing to improve any of it. It reads as the rare luxury sneaker with no styling to date, because there was never any styling to begin with.
