Spliced Oxford Shirt — Blue, Size S

Maison Margiela built its reputation on taking apart garments everyone assumes are finished, and its Oxford shirt is the plainest test of that habit: organic cotton, a buttoned collar, mother-of-pearl buttons and the four white stitches at the back. This spliced version keeps that template recognizable and then cuts into it. Where the house's standard Oxford is a single cloth from collar to hem, this one is assembled from oxford cloth, knit virgin wool and acetate-blend panels, with the raw edges left showing. It sits closer to the house's long habit of reconstruction than to its everyday shirting: the shirt is the subject, and the seams are the argument.

The body is organic cotton oxford cloth carrying tonal blue stripes, with panels of knit virgin wool and acetate-blend fabric set in beside it. Panel edges are left raw, and the darts are exposed rather than pressed away, so the shaping shows on the outside of the shirt. The collar is a spread collar, and the front closes over a concealed button placket that keeps the chest uninterrupted. Each barrel cuff is adjustable and fastens with a single button, and the buttons are mother-of-pearl. At the back collar, the house's white stitching sits against the blue, the one deliberately tidy detail on an otherwise unfinished garment. Made in Italy.

Read quickly, it is a blue Oxford. Read slowly, it is a fitting-room toile that was never taken to final. The exposed darts and raw seams borrow from pattern-cutting, the knit panels from a sweater, and the cloth from a button-down you could wear to an office. It is uniform and workroom sample in one garment, and it holds together because the blue keeps every panel in one register. Size S.
