Ostrich Feather Mohair Tuxedo Jacket — Black, Size IT 40 / US 4

By 2019 Pierpaolo Piccioli had made the feather one of Valentino's defining gestures. Ostrich capes walked his Spring 2019 couture show in Paris, and for Fall/Winter 2019 ready-to-wear he sent out coats covered entirely in plumage. This tuxedo jacket, from that same Fall/Winter 2019 season, is the disciplined counterpoint. Rather than drowning a silhouette in feathers, it places them on the garment least accustomed to ornament, the dinner jacket, and confines them to the sleeves. The body holds the line of black tie; the arms carry the couture.

The cloth is a dry wool-mohair, 53 percent wool to 47 percent mohair, the classic choice for evening tailoring: mohair gives black a faint, cool sheen in place of plain wool's flat absorbency, and it holds a crisp line through a long night. Peak lapels sharpen the shoulder, the single-breasted front closes on two buttons, and flap pockets sit at the hips. Ostrich plumes run along both sleeves, their long, open flues moving independently of the cloth, so every gesture registers twice. Inside, the body is lined in a viscose-silk blend, with a secondary polyester lining. Made in Italy.

It reads as the smoking jacket crossed with the couture cape. Over a white shirt it is black tie with a single, deliberate interruption; over bare skin it becomes the entire evening. Piccioli's Valentino ran on the tension between restraint and spectacle, and here both live in one garment without either giving ground. Size IT 40 (US 4).
