Crystal & Enamel VLogo Ear Cuff — Black/Gold

The VLogo debuted at the Sala Bianca show in 1968, and in Valentino Garavani's jewelry the Signature ear cuff is its plainest expression: one curve of gold-tone metal shaped like the letterform itself. This version argues the opposite. The V is demoted from the silhouette to a plaque at the center, and the body around it is built up in glossy black enamel, crossed with diagonal gold bars and capped at both ends with crystal pavé. The standard cuff is a logo you wear; this one is a piece of jewelry that happens to carry the logo, and the house's usual shorthand gives way to ornament.

The body is gold-tone metal coated in black enamel with a deep, liquid gloss that pools light along the curve. Gold-tone bars cross it on the diagonal in a woven, banded pattern, so the cuff reads like cord wrapped around a small bangle. At each end sits a cluster of pavé-set crystals, faceted enough to throw light in every direction. The polished gold VLogo plaque is anchored at the center, the one smooth, flat plane in an otherwise busy surface. The cuff slips over the outer ear without a piercing, hugs it on a curved silhouette, and is made to be worn on either ear. It is a single rather than a pair, 1.25 in long and 0.5 in wide, and it was made in Italy.

Read it as a hybrid of cocktail-ring jewelry and a heraldic badge. The banded enamel and glittering terminals belong to the costume-jewelry tradition, while the central plaque keeps it unmistakably Valentino. Worn alone on one ear, it behaves less like an earring than like a piece of armor: dark, glossy and slightly severe, with the crystals as the only soft note. The curve adjusts to fit most ears.
