Arazzo Floral Crop Sweater — Burgundy, Size XS

Valentino's sweater florals usually sit on top of the knit, as in the Pre-Fall 2015 white wool cable knit with flowers embroidered across its surface. Arazzo, Italian for tapestry, reverses that logic. Here the flowers are the fabric itself: roses, foliage and smaller botanical figures worked into a burgundy ground as a dense, pixelated field, so there is no blank base left to decorate. The shape departs from the house's usual drape too, cropped short with sleeves widened into a sculptural, almost architectural shoulder line.

The ground is a deep burgundy wool and cashmere blend, and the multicolor pattern runs edge to edge across the body and sleeves, leaving almost no plain knit showing. A contrasting pink embroidery follows the rounded neckline, worked over the finished knit rather than into it. The sleeves are short and wide, standing away from the arm instead of hugging it. At the hem the sweater opens over a sheer underlayer, and braided cord ties finished with tassels pull the edge together, so the closure reads as trim as much as function.

Read it as a hybrid of folk tapestry and cropped summer knit: an ornate, heavy-looking surface carried by a casual shape. The sheer layer and tasseled ties add a lingerie-and-passementerie note, which puts the sweater somewhere between an heirloom textile and loungewear, formal in pattern and relaxed in cut.
