All-Over Button Vest — Black, Size IT 50 / US 40

Dolce & Gabbana usually keeps the button in its working place. The house's vests tend to fall into two camps: the tailored waistcoat, as in the black velvet single-breasted cut with four buttons, and the sport vest in quilted nylon, closed with press studs and finished with a metal logo tag. This vest, shown on the Fall/Winter 2021 runway as Look 53, drops the closing job altogether. The button stops being a fastener and becomes the surface, with silver-plated buttons spread across a quilted nylon body. It borrows the waistcoat's one decorative device and enlarges it until it works as the fabric.

The shell is black quilted nylon, light in the hand, stitched in tonal thread that sinks into the quilting, and the edges are cut and finished clean so nothing competes with the hardware. The silver-plated buttons sit against the matte nylon in a dense field, and the metal reads cold and bright next to the black ground. It is a sleeveless vest, 34 inches in length, with a streamlined profile rather than a bulky one, and it is made in Italy.

Read it as chainmail by way of the haberdashery counter: a sport vest dressed from a notions drawer, armor translated into something you can wear over a shirt or under a coat. It sits between the puffer vest and the embellished showpiece, and it is never quiet about it.
