Bombé Sunglasses — Brown Acetate

Phoebe Philo returned in October 2023, five years after leaving Céline, and built her own house on her own terms: limited Editions sold directly, released when ready rather than by season. When that first Edit went live, the brown Bombé was among the very first pieces to sell out, gone within the opening hour. It has since become the frame that defines the label's eyewear, the shape a wave of imitators has tried to approximate and the one devotees name first. Bombé is French for domed, and the frame does exactly that, swelling away from the face instead of lying flat against it, so the shape is built from volume rather than outline.

The front is cut from deep brown acetate, polished to a dense, even finish that shows its thickness at every edge, and curves gently back toward the temples so the dark brown tinted lenses read as one continuous rounded form. The temples are extra-wide, flat planes of acetate that meet the front at a hard corner, with the Phoebe Philo name stamped along the inside, and they give the softness of the dome something to push against. Full UV-A and UV-B protection. Made in Italy.

What it reads as is a sculpture that happens to sit on the face: the visor of a ski goggle cut in the heavy acetate of an architect's glasses. The full Bombé in brown is sold out at Phoebe Philo and no longer offered on the brand's own site, where only the Half Bombé remains, and the major stockists list it as unavailable.
