Color-Block Cashmere Crewneck Sweater — Pastel Yellow, Taupe and Brown, Size IT 38 / US 4

Marni has always handled color with a deadpan eye, and Francesco Risso's Spring 2020 show pushed that to the loud end: palm trees built from wood pulp, cellulose fiber and old clothing, brushstroke prints wrapped around parkas, denim jackets and sweaters, and show notes that listed Fauvism and chromatic delirium among the afflictions. This knit takes the opposite route. There is no print and no brushwork here. The color arrives in flat fields of pastel yellow, taupe and brown, and the shape is a plain crewneck, so the blocking does all the talking. Where that season turned sweaters into design objects, this one remains a sweater and trusts the palette.

The body is a soft pastel yellow, worked in a fine gauge that keeps the cashmere smooth and light in the hand rather than fuzzy or dense. The sleeves change to taupe and brown, so the arms read as a separate argument from the torso and the color break does the work a print would do elsewhere in the house's catalog. A ribbed crew collar frames the neck, and the same rib finishes the cuffs and the hem, giving the relaxed body a defined edge at every opening so the proportion holds without clinging. It was made in Italy.

Read quickly, it is a clean cashmere basic, the kind of sweater that disappears under a coat. Read slowly, it is a Fauvist color study reduced to the scale of a crewneck: a warm yellow ground with two earth tones set against it, the way a painter tests a palette before committing.
