Jonathan Anderson spent years collaborating on other brands' sneakers before JW Anderson released one of its own: a high-top that debuted in the F/W 2021 and Pre-Fall 2021 lookbooks shot by Juergen Teller. The house's footwear had been built on the Stacked Brogue and, later, the chain loafer. This pair starts instead from an early gym shoe, with leather cut and laid over canvas like cladding and the seams left deliberately rough. Only the sole cites the brogue directly, a thick rubber slab that carries its stacked proportions into a sneaker.
The upper is purple canvas overlaid with calf leather panels, their edges marked by prominent stitching that sits on the surface instead of disappearing into a seam. The toe cap is exaggerated and rounded, nearly cartoonish, and the collar is cushioned and rises to the ankle above a conventional lace-up front. A debossed JW Anderson logo is pressed into the tongue. Underneath, a gum rubber sole stands about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) high, heavy enough that the shoe sits more like a boot than a trainer. It was made in Spain.
Read it as a sneaker drawn from memory by a shoemaker: the proportions are known, the volumes are wrong, and the wrongness is the point. The paneling gives it a patchwork gym-shoe logic, the sole gives it the weight of a brogue, and the purple keeps it from settling into either. It is a hybrid of athletic relic and tailored footwear, built to look hand-assembled rather than molded. Size US 10 (EU 43).
