Interlocking GG Canvas Dress Jacket — Blue, Size IT 42 / US 6

Gucci's GG canvas began as a bag and luggage fabric, a monogram worked into a material stiff enough to hold a shape. Most of the house's canvas jackets treat it as a surface to be edged in leather or tied off with a web belt. This one gives the monogram the entire garment: a short-sleeved, belt-looped dress jacket with the interlocking GG across every panel and the only relief kept for the lining. It takes the structure of military tailoring and the pattern of a handbag, and it softens neither.

The shell is a deep blue cotton-blend canvas carrying the interlocking GG all over. It closes single-breasted beneath a pointed shirt collar, on square gold-tone G buttons enamelled with the house's green-red-green Web stripe, and the same buttons fasten the flaps of four patch pockets, two at the chest and two at the hips. Epaulettes sit at the shoulders, the short sleeves finish in turned-back cuffs, and belt loops sit at the waist above a single vent at the back. Open the jacket and the lining is a rust-orange viscose satin jacquard scattered with small floral sprigs, so the inside trades the monogram for something softer and warmer. It runs 30.3 inches in length and was made in Italy.

Read it as a safari jacket drawn by a luggage maker: the pockets, epaulettes and belt loops of a utility garment, finished in the one pattern that identifies a handbag from across a room.
