GOLF VISOR
The ‘Golf Visor’ sunglasses represent John Galliano’s Fall/Winter 2004 collection at Christian Dior — a frame that took the wraparound shield silhouette and pushed it into something closer to sportswear costuming. In orange, with its removable visor detail intact, this is one of the defining statement pieces of Galliano’s most theatrically ambitious season at the house.
The orange acetate is uncompromising — a choice that forecloses any possibility of the frame receding into an outfit. Galliano understood that the best accessories don’t complement; they compete. The material is lightweight despite its presence, which makes the Golf Visor considerably more wearable than it appears on first encounter.
Galliano’s F/W 2004 collection took athletic codes — golf, specifically — and subjected them to his maximalist reinterpretation. The Golf Visor is the collection’s most wearable artifact: a functional sports frame transformed into something closer to a performance object. In orange, it has not aged into irrelevance. It has aged into cult status.
