Cashmere Mock-Neck Cardigan — Cream, Size S

Céline Fall 2018 is the season that closed the Phoebe Philo years. It was presented in the Rue Vivienne showrooms in March 2018 and put together by her studio after her departure. That collection leaned on brooches, clasps and drawstrings so that oversized coats and dresses could be adjusted to the body, and this cardigan uses none of them. It is knitwear reduced to its grammar: a collar, a placket, a rib. Even by Philo's standards of restraint it is quiet, closer to a cashmere basic than to the sculptural volume the house built its name on.

The cashmere is cream and ultra-fine, knitted to hang rather than cling, so the body falls straight from a dropped shoulder line. A mock-neck collar sits close to the throat and folds over on itself in a soft roll instead of standing stiff. The front closes with a plain button placket fitted with horn-style buttons in a natural tone, and no logo appears anywhere on the face of the garment. The sleeves are blouson-shaped, full through the upper arm, and draw in to ribbed cuffs; a ribbed hem does the same at the bottom edge and gathers the volume back in. Made in Italy.

Read it as a Philo cardigan with the architecture removed: part schoolroom button-through, part cocooning pullover, with the mock neck and blouson sleeve pulling it toward the ease of a sweatshirt while the horn-style buttons and ribbing keep it inside the knitwear tradition. It works as a layer under a long coat and as the main event with plain trousers, and nothing on it announces the house. Size S.
