4022 Rectangle Sunglasses — Brushed Gold/Brown

Chanel entered the 2000s with an eyewear program built on restraint rather than logo. Under Karl Lagerfeld's direction the house pared its frames down to slim metal and precise geometry, and the 4022 is that thinking at its cleanest — a narrow rectangle, made in Italy, with the CHANEL wordmark engraved into the temple rather than applied to it. It belongs to the same early-2000s run of metal Chanel frames as the 4020, 4024 and 4032, now the most actively collected chapter in the house's eyewear archive.
The frame is satin gold-tone metal throughout, with a flat faceted front that steps down at the outer corners into a sculpted temple hinge — the detail that gives the 4022 presence on the face despite the slim proportions. Lenses are original solid brown, marked ©CHANEL® at both outer edges. Temples taper to burgundy acetate tips and carry the engraved CHANEL plaque, with ©CHANEL® MADE IN ITALY CE stamped to the interior arm alongside 4022, colour code c.140/21, and 51□21 125 — 51mm lens, 21mm bridge, 125mm temple. Supplied with its original Chanel case.
Y2K eyewear is usually collected for its excess: the shields, the rimless rhinestone pieces, the logo-plastered wraps. The 4022 is the opposite argument, and it's why this reference keeps surfacing on people who actually dress. It's small, it's metal, it's unlogoed at ten feet, and it reads equally as archive Chanel or as an anonymous pair of very good Italian frames depending on who's looking. Twenty-odd years on, that ambiguity is the entire point.
