Tech Hooded Jacket — Black, Size IT 38 / US 2

Daniel Lee ran Bottega Veneta from 2018 to 2021, taking over from Tomas Maier, whose seventeen years at the house had set a restrained register. Lee's break with that register was to bring the vocabulary of outdoor gear into the house and cut it oversized, here in a technical fabric finished with a satin sheen. Where the house had been known for supple leather and soft tailoring, this jacket is outerwear first, built around a surface that holds light rather than a material that shows handwork. It is a sportswear proposition delivered with a luxury finish, and it is the clearest way to see how far Lee pushed Bottega from its established codes.

The shell is a smooth, lightweight technical fabric in black with a subtle satin sheen. The shoulders drop below the natural line, so the sleeves hang loose from the body, while elasticated cuffs and an elasticated hem gather the volume back in at the edges. A zip closes the front, finished with tonal pulls that disappear into the black. The hood is integrated rather than detachable, and the pockets are zipped and enter from the side, so the front panels stay uninterrupted. It is made in Italy.

Read it as a hybrid of the rain shell and the evening coat. The proportions, the elastic and the zips come straight from sportswear, but the black sheen and the drop of the shoulder give it the formality of tailoring, so it looks equally deliberate over a slip dress or over knitwear. The tension is the point: it is practical in every detail and still too glossy to be mistaken for gear. Size IT 38 (US 2).
