Pagoda One-Shoulder Gown — Black, Size FR 38 / IT 42 / US 6

Olivier Rousteing built the pagoda shoulder out of tailoring: stacked pads under blazers, pantsuits and sequined jackets, most visibly in the Spring 2021 collection, where WWD saw the shoulders pushed to a radical peak. This gown, from L'Atelier Balmain, the house's Parisian couture workshop line, keeps that upturned line and removes the jacket beneath it. The structure sits on a single shoulder and everything else is draped viscose, so the engineering normally spent on daywear tailoring goes entirely into evening. It comes from one of Rousteing's last two collections at the house, before he left in November 2025 after 14 years as creative director.

The gown is a floor-length column in black viscose, cut long and slim. One peaked, structured shoulder carries the weight and a single long fitted sleeve follows the arm down, while on the other side a thin strap holds the left shoulder and leaves the underarm open. Across the torso the bodice is draped asymmetrically, the fabric gathered into sculpted folds that travel across the body rather than down it. Along the right side seam, a mesh panel set with crystals runs the full length of the dress and surfaces through a high thigh slit, so the crystals read as a narrow vertical line that opens with each step. An invisible zip closes the side without interrupting the drape, and the hem finishes in a subtle train. Made in France.

Read it as a blazer's shoulder grafted onto a floor-length column of draped viscose, with a single crystal seam as the only loud gesture. It is architecture on one side and drapery on the other, black throughout, and restrained everywhere except the thigh. Size FR 38 / IT 42 / US 6.
